Washington
The new President of America, who has made a big announcement regarding citizenship on the basis of birth, is not getting the support of the people of the country. A survey conducted before the elections regarding this decision of Donald Trump has revealed that more than half of the Americans are opposing it. Trump has decided to change the Constitution to deny citizenship to children of illegal immigrants born in America.
A survey conducted by the Associated Press in January showed that only 3 out of 10 Americans support changing the Constitution to change citizenship based on birth. At the same time, 51 percent of American adults are against it. Whereas, only 21 percent adults are supporting. There were 20 percent respondents who were neither supporting nor opposing the policy.
Even politicians are not with us
The special thing is that among the independent politicians, 46 percent are against it, 23 percent are supporting it. Whereas, 30 percent are neither agreeing nor denying. In Trump’s party Republic, 53 percent are supporting and 26 percent are against. Here, 73 percent of Democrats are opposing the policy and 11 percent are supporting. 15 percent did not give any answer. In the survey conducted between January 9 and 13, 1147 people were surveyed. The margin of error in the sample may be plus or minus 3.9 percent.
Trump’s announcement
On Monday, in the early hours of his second term as president, Trump signed an order declaring that in the future, children born in the country to undocumented immigrants will no longer be considered citizens. The order will also apply to children of certain mothers living in the country legally but temporarily, such as foreign students or tourists. Trump’s executive order states that children of such non-citizens are not “subject to the jurisdiction” of the United States and thus are not covered by the long-standing constitutional guarantees of the 14th Amendment.
