The MSP of raw jute (TD-3 category) for the 2025-26 season has been fixed at Rs 5,650/- per quintal. This will ensure a return of 66.8 per cent above the weighted average cost of production at an all India level. The recommended MSP of raw jute for the marketing season 2025-26 is in line with the principle of setting the MSP at least 1.5 times the weighted average cost of production at all India level, announced by the Government in the Budget 2018-19. The MSP of raw jute for marketing season 2025-26 is higher by Rs 315/- per quintal as compared to the previous marketing season 2024-25. Government of India has increased the MSP of raw jute from Rs 2400/- per quintal for 2014-15 to Rs 5,650/- per quintal for 2025-26, thus increasing the MSP of raw jute by Rs 3250/- per quintal (2.35 times). The MSP amount paid to jute growing farmers during the period 2014-15 to 2024-25 stood at Rs 1300 crore, while during the period 2004-05 to 2013-14, the amount paid was Rs 441 crore.
The livelihood of 40 lakh farming families is directly or indirectly dependent on the jute industry. About 4 lakh workers get direct employment in jute mills and in jute trading. Last year, jute was purchased from 1 lakh 70 thousand farmers. 82% of jute farmers are from West Bengal, while Assam and Bihar account for 9% (each) of the remaining jute production.
Jute Corporation of India (JCI) will continue to conduct price support operations as the nodal agency of the Central Government and in such operations, if any loss is incurred, the loss will be fully reimbursed by the Central Government.
