Trump first gave bitter pill to Canada and Mexico, announced 25% tariff

Washington

Donald Trump has made big announcements as soon as he took oath as the 47th President of America. Trump declared a national emergency on America’s southern border and said that he would re-implement his ‘remain in Mexico’ policy. He announced that ‘all illegal entries will be stopped immediately and we will begin the process of sending illegal immigrants back to their countries.’ Trump said, ‘…we are going to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America…’

President Trump said he would sign an executive order to “immediately stop all government censorship and restore free speech in America.” Trump has said that it will be the official policy of the government to mention only the two genders in his address to the nation. Trump said in his inaugural speech that ‘America’s golden age is just beginning.’

Earlier, Chief Justice John Roberts administered the oath of office to Trump. Before Trump, JD Vance was sworn in as Vice President by Justice Brett Kavanaugh. Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar represented India in this function.

President Trump is blunt that he wants to create an America that is far ahead of other countries. He wants to make America rich, developed and great again. But for the progress of America, he first talked about imposing 25 percent tariff on Canada and Mexico.

Trump has said that he can impose 25 percent tariff on Canada and Mexico. However, this decision will be implemented after about 10 days from 1st February. Due to this decision, businessmen will have to pay 25 percent tax on goods coming to America from Canada-Mexico.

If Trump implements this decision, America’s trade war with its neighbors may start. Because Canada may have said that it wants normal relations with America, but if Trump increases the tariffs, then the governments of Canada and Mexico will also have to take the same step.

Many records broken in Trump’s swearing in

Many records have been broken after Donald Trump took oath as the 47th President of America. He was sworn in in an indoor ceremony, which took place for the second time in American history. This decision was taken after the severe cold. Despite the severe cold in America, his supporters reached Washington DC.

What agendas can be worked on after swearing in?
If reports are to be believed, Trump may sign more than 200 executive orders after taking oath. Of these, 50 executive orders will be legally binding. That means they cannot be easily changed by the Parliament. These will include provisions ranging from border security to domestic energy production and merit for the recruitment of federal personnel.
1. Rules related to immigration and citizenship

i). Refugee problem and border security
President Trump may initiate a comprehensive plan to deport refugees and other people living in America illegally. The New York Post, quoting leaked documents, has claimed that it will start from Chicago. After this, a campaign against illegal immigration will be launched across the country. Agencies have made preparations for this. Reports also said that the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement has deployed 100-200 officers to carry out the operation. After this week-long campaign, those accused of illegal immigration will be sent back to their country.

ii). The right to citizenship by birth can be cut short in America
Trump can also issue an executive order through which there is a plan to automatically revoke the citizenship of those children whose parents are not already US citizens. In fact, it is a constitutional law in America that every person born in America automatically gets citizenship there. Be it the child of an American citizen or a refugee. Trump has already called this law ridiculous.

However, for Trump, this promise can also become a thorn in his neck. Actually, the rules for changing the US Constitution are quite strict. In such a situation, changing these rules through Parliament and states can prove to be a difficult task for American Presidents. Challenges may come in its way from state legislatures to both houses of Parliament.

iii). Preparation for ban on Islamic countries
It is noteworthy that after winning the elections in 2016, Trump, in one of his first select orders, had announced a travel ban on people from some Muslim-majority countries. These countries included the names of countries like Syria, Libya, Yemen and Sudan. This ban imposed by Trump was then challenged in the court. Eventually President Joe Biden weakened the rules of the ban.

However, Donald Trump has said that this ban will be re-implemented in his new term. Not only this, he has also promised to stop the arrival of refugees from these countries. It is not yet clear on which Muslim countries Trump will further impose such travel ban on under his order, although many countries in West Asia may come under its purview.

2. Energy Sector

i). Preparing to exit Paris climate agreement
In his new term, Donald Trump can separate America from global environmental rules like before. For this, he has already indicated to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement. It is believed that Trump may once again insist on increasing the use of fossil fuels to increase energy production, regardless of the effects of carbon emissions.

How definite Trump’s goal is on the issue of energy production can be gauged from the fact that just after winning the elections in November, he had announced that Chris Wright would be made the Energy Minister in his government, who would fight climate change. It is considered imagination only. It is said that Trump has given him the responsibility of reducing red tape in government work and increasing investment in fossil fuels.

ii). Attempt to stop renewable energy projects
After becoming President, Donald Trump has also hinted towards closing the lease for offshore wind energy projects of the US government. Apart from this they can stop orders promoting electric vehicles. However, his fellow industrialist Elon Musk has been a staunch supporter of the renewable energy industry. His own company Tesla is also known for making e-vehicles. In such a situation, there is a situation of doubt regarding this decision of Trump.

Not only this, after winning the elections, on the very first day, he had pledged to close down renewable energy projects. This created a stir in the industry and a huge fall was recorded in the shares of renewable energy companies. “We’re going to make sure it’s gone on day one,” Trump said of wind energy companies. In such a situation, the renewable energy sector may remain Trump’s target.

3. Economic-trade policies

In the 75 days between winning the presidential election and taking oath, Trump has also made his stance clear regarding the economic and trade policies of his upcoming administration. In this context, he has even warned many countries to impose import duty. On the other hand, his Make America Great Again campaign can also force American businesses spread across the world to work towards American interests. Due to this, in the coming time, the production of American companies in other countries can be focused on America or its allied countries.

i). Preparation to impose import duty
How Trump’s statements can create a stir all over the world can be gauged from the fact that while his threats to impose tariffs have created an uproar in Canadian politics, even Chinese President Xi Jinping has been banned through international laws. It has to be said to protect business interests. Meanwhile, Trump has also given a statement regarding imposing tariffs on India.

It is believed that aggressive tariffs, especially focused on China, will be imposed to protect domestic industries. Trump himself has said that he can increase the tariff on China and take it to 60 percent. Not only this, Trump has threatened to impose 10 percent tariff on China if it does not stop the import of fentanyl, a narcotic substance. Trump had imposed tariffs of up to 25 percent on many Chinese products. The surprising thing is that due to increasing competition with China, even the Biden government did not change Trump’s decision of increased tariffs.

Apart from this, Trump announced to impose 25 percent tariff on Canada and Mexico. These threats of Donald Trump have had the biggest impact on the Justin Trudeau government of Canada, where amidst political turmoil, first the Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland and then the Prime Minister Justin Trudeau himself resigned. On the other hand, Trump has threatened to impose tariffs of up to 1000 percent on cars imported from Mexico. The newly elected President alleges that if refugees and drugs coming from Canada and Mexico are not stopped, these countries will have to pay a huge price.

It is believed that after assuming the presidency, Trump will focus on imposing import duty in India. Like China, Canada and Mexico, the newly elected President has not yet revealed at what rate he can impose tariff on imports from India, but experts believe that his step may come soon.

ii). cut rules
Federal regulations would be reduced to promote America’s economic growth and trade. Under this, apart from reducing production in foreign countries, American businesses will be encouraged to produce in America itself.

4. Military Policies-Social Policies
Domestically, Trump has talked about removing transgenders from military service through an executive order. He had made his stand regarding this clear in December itself. At an event, Trump said that the first order I will issue is to end child sexual mutilation, remove all transgenders from the US military, elementary schools, middle and high schools. Apart from this, he said that men will also be kept away from women’s sports. As per the policy of USA government there will be only two genders.

Donald Trump has long opposed the inclusion of the transgender community in the military. During his first term, Trump had said that he would stop funding schools that promote racial indoctrination or any kind of gender-political material to children. Not only this, Trump has also been vocal on keeping transgender athletes out of sports.

According to the report, 78-year-old Trump had issued a similar order during his previous tenure as well. Then under his orders the recruitment of transgenders in the army was stopped. However, transgenders already serving were allowed to continue their work. However, this time he is also preparing to remove the transgenders currently serving in the army.
5. On war-conflict issues

(i). Russia–Ukraine conflict
There are reports that Donald Trump may talk to his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on phone immediately after taking the oath of office. Their aim will be to establish a ceasefire in the Russia-Ukraine war within 24 hours. For this, a plan was also leaked by the Trump administration, under which whatever area is under the occupation of Russia and Ukraine will be left with them and a 30 kilometer buffer zone will be established between the armies of the two countries. However, this may cause Ukraine to lose a large area. Despite this, Trump may emphasize on this agreement to show his second term as a peacemaker.

In return, the Trump administration can announce a conditional $30 billion aid package to Ukraine. This package will be based on the terms of the ceasefire. Israel-Hamas conflict: Trump, in his election speeches, had said without mentioning the ongoing war in Gaza, “I will stop the war.” This indicates that his administration can play an active role in establishing peace in the Middle East.

(ii). conflict in west asia
By the time Trump won the presidential election, Israel had destroyed Hezbollah in Lebanon as well as Hamas in Gaza. However, he was not successful in freeing the hostages. After this, Donald Trump warned Hamas that if it does not release the Israeli hostages soon, it will have to face consequences. After this, news came that a ceasefire was under serious consideration between Israel and Hamas. Just before Donald Trump was sworn in, Israel and Hamas agreed to a ceasefire on January 19.

After the completion of the first phase of this major conflict, the Trump administration will try to complete the next phases peacefully.
Apart from this, after the recent fall of the Bashar-al-Assad government in Syria and the coming to power of the rebel government, Trump will try to increase America’s dominance in this region as well.
The Trump administration may plan to impose stringent sanctions on Iran’s nuclear program and take strict action against it.
