The Indian government on Monday summoned Bangladesh’s Deputy High Commissioner Nooral Islam over the rising tension due to the border fence between the two countries. This information has been given in the report of news agency ANI. This development comes a day after Bangladesh Foreign Ministry summoned Indian High Commissioner Prannoy Verma over the issue.
Nooral Islam seen leaving South Block
According to ANI report, Nooral Islam was seen leaving South Block after being called by the Ministry of External Affairs. Tension on the border between India and Bangladesh increased when Dhaka alleged that India was trying to erect fencing at five places on the border in violation of the bilateral agreement.
According to Bangladesh’s advisor on internal affairs, Lieutenant General (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, clashes have erupted in five areas, including (north-western) Chapainawabganj, Naugaon, Lalmonirhat and Teen Bigha corridor.
Bangladesh summoned the Indian High Commissioner
A day earlier on Sunday, the Bangladeshi Foreign Ministry had summoned Indian High Commissioner Prannoy Verma to discuss the increasing tension on the border. Bangladesh Foreign Secretary Mohammad Jashim Uddin met Prannoy Verma in Dhaka and expressed ‘deep concern’ on behalf of the Bangladesh government over the recent border tensions.
The Ministry of External Affairs said in its statement, ‘Foreign Secretary Ambassador Mohammad Jashim Uddin on Sunday expressed deep concern on behalf of the Government of Bangladesh to the High Commissioner of India in the Ministry of External Affairs Prannoy Verma over the recent activities of BSF on the India-Bangladesh border.’
The meeting lasted for 45 minutes
Pranay Verma reached Bangladesh Foreign Ministry at around 3:00 pm (local time). According to news agency BSS, his meeting with the Foreign Secretary lasted for about 45 minutes. After coming out of the meeting, he told the media, ‘I met the Foreign Secretary to discuss India’s commitment to ensure a crime-free border and effectively address the challenges of smuggling, movement of criminals and human trafficking. ‘
He said, ‘There is agreement between us regarding fencing the border for security. In this regard, talks are going on between BSF and BGB (Border Security Force and Border Guard Bangladesh). We hope that the consensus will be implemented and a collaborative approach will be adopted to deal with crime.
