Russia welcomes US Donald Trump’s willingness to resolve problems through talks

Russia has welcomed US President-elect Donald Trump’s willingness to resolve problems through dialogue. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said progress could be made in planning a meeting between the two heads of state after Trump’s inauguration on January 20. Earlier on Thursday, Trump said that a meeting was being planned between him and Putin, but he did not give any timeframe.

It is hoped that Trump’s return to the White House could lead to a diplomatic solution to the Russia-Ukraine war. However, this has also given rise to fear in Kiev that Ukraine may have to pay a heavy price for any hasty peace agreement. Trump repeatedly said during his election campaign that he could end the Russia-Ukraine war within 24 hours. However, now he and his advisors are talking about resolving the issue within a few months of assuming office. Peskov said Putin has repeatedly expressed his willingness to hold talks with international leaders, including Trump. “It does not require any conditions, (only) mutual desire and political will to resolve existing problems through dialogue is required,” he said.

“We see that Trump has also shown his readiness to solve problems through dialogue and we welcome that,” he said. According to Peskov, there are no specific plans for the meeting yet, but Russia is working on the assumption that both sides are ready for it. Obviously, after Trump enters the Oval Office, there will be some commotion. Trump said on Thursday, “President Putin wants to meet. He has also said this publicly and we have to end this war. It’s a bloody mess.”
