The metro rail network is expanding rapidly in the country with the world’s 5th largest economy. The metro rail network in India has increased to 1000 km. With such a large network, India has become the country with the third largest metro rail network in the world after China and America.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the extension of Delhi Metro’s Magenta Line today. He will also inaugurate the 13 km long section of Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Namo Bharat Corridor built between Sahibabad in UP and New Ashok Nagar in Delhi. With this, people of Delhi will also be able to reach Meerut in just 35 to 40 minutes by traveling in Namo Bharat train. Metro in Delhi was started in 2002. Although metro train in India was started in 1984. The first metro train ran in Kolkata.

Metro runs in how many states?

Metro train is no longer limited to Delhi and Kolkata only. It has expanded to many states of the country. Metro trains now run in 23 cities in 11 states of the country. In the year 2014, this train ran only in 5 states and 5 cities. Currently the metro train network is continuously expanding. There are preparations to run it in many states of the country including Madhya Pradesh.

How big has the network become?

India’s metro rail network has reached 1000 kilometers. With such a large network, India ranks third after China and America. In the year 2014, the metro rail network was only 248 kilometers. In such a situation, the metro network has increased 3 times in the last 10 years.

In an event last year, Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri had said that in the next two-three years, India will have the second largest metro network, leaving behind America in terms of metro network.

How many passengers travel?

Today, about one crore passengers travel by metro across the country every day. The number of passengers has increased two and a half times in the last 10 years. This number is increasing rapidly.

Delhi Metro has the highest number of passengers traveling in the metro across the country. On an average, about 75 lakh passengers travel in Delhi every day. In other states of the country, very few passengers travel in the metro.

Only Delhi Metro is in profit!

At present metro trains are running in many parts of the country. Delhi Metro has the biggest advantage. Metro trains are running in losses in many cities of the country. The number of passengers in those trains is not enough.

If we talk about Namo Bharat train, it too is not getting enough passengers right now. On an average, 10 thousand passengers are traveling in this train every day. If we compare Delhi Metro, more passengers travel in Delhi Metro in a day than the number of passengers traveling in Namo Bharat in a year. After connecting with Delhi, it is expected that the number of passengers in Namo Bharat will increase.
