Imphal
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Saturday condemned the indiscriminate firing by Kuki militants in two villages in Imphal East district. He said that this is an attempt to spoil the peace and happiness of the state. Appealing for peace and unity in the wake of the violence, Biren Singh said all necessary measures have been taken to handle the situation.
He wrote on social media platform “This cowardly and unprovoked attack on innocent lives is an attack on peace and harmony.” He further wrote in the post, “Adequate security personnel have been sent to the affected areas. The injured are receiving necessary medical attention, and the Government calls for peace and harmony in the face of such challenges. There should be proper coordination and understanding between central forces and state police while dealing with such situations.”
Two people, including a police officer, were injured during a shootout with armed groups on Friday. The violence erupted when armed men from the hills attacked Sansabi and Thamnapokpi villages in the district with guns and bombs. Security forces retaliated.
Two people were injured during the clash in Sansabi village. Meanwhile, 37-year-old police officer K Haridas was shot in the left shoulder, after which he was taken to Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences. The attack caused chaos and local people fled to save their lives.
Former Chief Justice of Manipur High Court Siddharth Mridul said last Tuesday, “Whenever the situation in Manipur seems to be getting better, new violence erupts. I think some forces are external, not internal. Even if these forces are external, they have allies at the local level, who ensure that the agenda of burning Manipur is vigorously pursued.”
