Corbin Bosch, who made his debut for South Africa, has created history by dismissing Pakistani captain Shan Masood on his very first ball. He also showed the way to the pavilion to vice-captain Saud Shakeel.
Corbin Bosch, who made his debut for South Africa, on Thursday became only the fifth South African bowler to take a wicket on the first ball of his Test career. The right-arm fast bowler made his Test debut in the first match of the series against Pakistan in Centurion. He was introduced in the 15th over to break Pakistan’s opening partnership of Sam Ayub and captain Shan Masood. Masood looked resolute in his approach, with Bosch’s first Test delivery turning both his and South Africa’s wishes into reality. Just after the drinks break, he pitched the ball upwards and surprised Masood.
Both captain and vice-captain were out.
Shan Masood could not understand the ball and played a loose shot which went into the hands of Marco Jensen in the lane. By taking a wicket with the first ball of his Test career, Corbin Bosch joined an elite club that includes Bert Vogler (vs England, Johannesburg, 1906), Dane Peat (vs Zimbabwe, Harare, 2014), Hardus Viljoen ( against England, Johannesburg, 2016) and Tshepo Moreki (against New Zealand, Mount Maunganui, 2024) are included.
3 bowlers did this amazing thing in 2024
Of the 25 instances of bowlers taking a wicket on the first ball of their career, three have occurred in 2024, the most in a calendar year. Before Bosch, young West Indies bowler Shamar Joseph had taken the wicket of Steven Smith with his very first ball at the Adelaide Oval in January. South Africa’s Tshepo Moreki had dismissed New Zealand’s Devon Conway in Mount Maunganui in February.
Pakistan’s batsmen fell
Bosch took his second wicket of the day by dismissing Pakistan’s vice-captain Saud Shakeel. Masood’s deputy looked eager to score runs as soon as he came to the crease. In his desire to score fast runs, he lost his wicket. He palmed his stumps to find the right angle for his shot, but ran out of space. After bouncing off the surface, the ball gained height, due to which Shakeel was left with no space. The ball hit his glove and went to wicketkeeper Kyle Verreen.
Karbin Bosch achieved a big achievement
Corbin Bosch became the fifth bowler overall for South Africa to take a wicket on the first ball in his debut Test. Earlier, Bert Volger had achieved this feat in the year 1906 while Dan Peet had achieved this feat in 2014. Hardus Villahon created history in 2016, while Tshepo Moreki created history by taking a wicket on the very first ball in his Test debut in 2024. South African team has been playing Test cricket since 1889. This is the first time in 135 years of Test history that a South African bowler has taken a wicket on the first ball on debut in a Boxing Day Test match.
