Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will be remembered as the father of economic reforms in India, the one who freed it from the license raj and the savior who rescued the country from a situation when even its gold reserves were mortgaged. Dr. Manmohan Singh, who made his mark as a determined politician, was the architect of present India and a man rich in scholarship.

Manmohan Singh, a humble, learned, soft-spoken and believer in consensus, died on Thursday night at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi. He was 92 years old.

As a Congress leader, he led the country for 10 years from 2004-2014 and before that as Finance Minister, helped shape the country’s economic framework. He was a globally renowned personality in the financial and economic fields.

His government launched age-changing schemes like Right to Information (RTI), Right to Education (RTE) and MNREGA.

Manmohan Singh started his life amidst deprivation. Manmohan Singh, who once studied in the dim light of kerosene lamp in his village which was deprived of electricity, later became a reputed educationist. He was a reluctant politician who did not like the rough-and-tumble politics of the mainstream.

Sonia Gandhi had refused to accept the post of Prime Minister despite her party’s request and everyone was shocked when she chose Manmohan Singh for the top post. Thus, academic bureaucrat Manmohan Singh became the 14th Prime Minister of India in 2004.

He took oath as Prime Minister for the first time on 22 May 2004 and for the second time on 22 May 2009.

Manmohan Singh led the country for 10 years and the equation between Sonia Gandhi and Singh during this period is often cited as an example of a balanced partnership. The understanding between the two exemplifies how working relationships should really be.

This balanced approach of Singh was also visible with the other allies of UPA. Despite the inevitable tensions, Singh managed to live up to the dharma of the alliance.

Former Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra said Singh always stood firm as a rock in walking the moral path, even when he faced trouble from the political party he represented.

In 2014, UPA had to be voted out of power amid allegations of corruption and scams, after which Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to power at the Centre.

Singh was praised for leading India on the path to liberalization and privatization in the early 1990s, but Singh was also criticized for turning a blind eye to corruption allegations.

When India signed a civil nuclear deal with the US during his first term as Prime Minister, the alliance began to crack. Due to the exit of the Left parties from the UPA, his government was in danger but the government was saved.

The UPA government faced its first trust vote on 22 July 2008 when the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) led Left Front withdrew support over India’s approach to the IAEA for the India-US nuclear deal.

The UPA won the trust vote by securing 275 votes against the opposition’s 256 votes, with 10 MPs abstaining.

In the last days of his tenure as Prime Minister, when he was seen defending his government’s record and the Congress’ stance on controversial issues like the 2G scam, Singh made his point in strong words and declared that he was not weak .

In January 2004 he said, “I sincerely hope that history will be kinder to me than the contemporary media or opposition parties in Parliament.”

After more than two decades, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge condoled Singh’s demise with a touching post on ‘X’, saying, “Undoubtedly, history will judge you generously, Dr. Manmohan Singh ji!”

The decade under Singh’s leadership is widely considered to be an era of unprecedented growth and prosperity. His journey to the pinnacle of India’s governance and political power is unique in the political history of India.

Singh, always seen in a blue turban, was appointed Finance Minister of India in the Narasimha Rao government in 1991. His role in initiating a comprehensive policy of economic reforms is now recognized throughout the world.

In January 1991, India struggled to meet its essential imports, especially oil and fertilisers, and repay official debt. In July 1991, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) pledged 46.91 tonnes of gold with the Bank of England and the Bank of Japan to raise US$400 million.

Manmohan Singh soon took command of the economy with great skill and promptly bought it back within a few months.

Vohra, who was then the defense and home secretary, said he had to visit the then finance minister Singh’s doorstep every day. “I was kind of begging for some financial relief for my department,” Vohra said.

Born on September 26, 1932, in village Gah in the Punjab province of undivided India (now Pakistan) to Gurmukh Singh and Amrit Kaur, Singh completed his matriculation in Punjab in 1948. His academic career took him from Punjab to Cambridge, UK where he obtained a first class honors degree in Economics in 1957. Singh then obtained the degree of ‘D.Phil’ in Economics from Nuffield College, Oxford University in 1962.

He started his career teaching at the faculty of Panjab University and the prestigious ‘Delhi School of Economics’. He also worked briefly in the UNCTAD Secretariat and later became Secretary-General of the South Commission in Geneva between 1987 and 1990.

In the year 1971, Singh joined the Ministry of Commerce of the Government of India as an Economic Advisor. This was soon followed by his appointment as Chief Economic Adviser in the Ministry of Finance in 1972.

The many government positions he held include Secretary in the Ministry of Finance; The posts include Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission, Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, Advisor to the Prime Minister and Chairman of the University Grants Commission.

His political career began in 1991 as a member of the Rajya Sabha when he was the Leader of Opposition between 1998 and 2004. Interestingly, the two-time Prime Minister was an MP for 33 years, but only as a Rajya Sabha member. He never won a Lok Sabha election and lost once to BJP’s VK Malhotra from the South Delhi constituency in 1999.

Singh was often accused by the BJP of running a government that was beset with corruption. The party called him ‘Mounmohan Singh’ and alleged that he did not raise his voice against corrupt leaders in his cabinet. Despite the allegations, Singh always maintained the dignity of himself and his post.

He is survived by his wife Gursharan Kaur and three daughters. He never liked being in the limelight and that is why the country knew very little about his family. Leo was calm by nature, but determined. Sources close to him said Singh had almost made up his mind to quit as Prime Minister in September 2013 when Rahul Gandhi termed the Union Cabinet’s decision to bring an ordinance to allow convicted politicians to contest elections as ‘complete nonsense’. and recommended its demolition. Singh was abroad at that time.

Singh was highly critical of the demonetisation move by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2016, terming it as ‘organized loot and legalized plunder’.

In 2008, in response to a no-confidence motion against his government, Singh had philosophically said, “We are all migratory birds! We are here today, gone tomorrow! But for a short period of time, the people of India have trusted us and entrusted us with this responsibility, it is our duty to remain honest and loyal in discharging these responsibilities.
