US President-elect Donald Trump has criticized outgoing President Joe Biden’s decision to commute the sentences of 37 people on federal death row. Trump said in his social media post, “Joe Biden has commuted the death sentences of 37 of our country’s worst murderers. When you hear the actions of each of them, you will not believe that they did it. It doesn’t make any sense.
According to the news, Trump’s comments came a day after Biden announced that he was commuting the sentences of 37 of the 40 people serving federal death row to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. “I condemn these killers, mourn the victims of their despicable acts, and express my grief for all the families who have suffered unimaginable and irreparable loss,” Biden said in a statement.
Biden added, “But based on my conscience and my experience as a public defender, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Vice President, and now President, I am more convinced than ever that we must stop the use of the death penalty at the federal level “
“I cannot in good conscience step back and allow a new administration to resume executions of those I had stopped,” the outgoing president said.
In another post on Tuesday, Trump said that as soon as he takes office, he will direct the Justice Department to “vigorously enforce the death penalty” to protect American families and children from “violent rapists, murderers and monsters.”
“We will again be a nation of law and order,” Trump said. According to the Death Penalty Information Center, a total of 2250 prisoners are facing death penalty in America. It is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide data and analysis to the media, policy makers, and the general public on issues related to the death penalty and those affected by it.
