Congress on Saturday took a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying that the Prime Minister, who travels abroad frequently, left for Kuwait while the people of violence-hit Manipur kept waiting for him. PM Modi left for Kuwait on Saturday on a two-day visit to strengthen relations in many areas including defense and trade. This is the first visit of an Indian Prime Minister to Kuwait after 43 years.
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh wrote on ‘X’, ‘The people of Manipur continue to wait, this is their fate because Mr. Modi is refusing to fix any date. Prime Minister Modi, who frequently visits foreign countries, left for Kuwait. Congress has asked PM Modi several times to visit Manipur. The party says this will help in restoring peace and normalcy in the conflict-torn state.
Before PM Modi, the then Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi had visited this Gulf country in 1981. In a statement before leaving for the visit, Modi said his talks with the top leadership of Kuwait will provide an opportunity to chart the future partnership between India and Kuwait. “We greatly value our historical ties with Kuwait, which span generations,” he said. We are not only strong partners in trade and energy, but we also have a common interest in peace, security and stability in West Asia.
Modi has visited Kuwait on the invitation of Kuwait’s Emir Sheikh Meshaal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah. Modi said he looked forward to his meetings with Kuwait’s Amir, Crown Prince and Prime Minister. He said, ‘I look forward to meeting the Indian expatriate in Kuwait, who have contributed significantly to strengthening the bonds of friendship between the two countries.’
