Washington
In order to realize the American dream, thousands of Indians try to reach America every year through the dangerous and illegal ‘Dunkey Route’. This route takes them through the inaccessible forests of Canada and the dangerous border to America. But now this difficult journey may soon become impossible. Before taking office in January 2025, US President-elect Donald Trump has warned Canada of imposing 25% import duty if it does not take tough action on illegal migration and drug trafficking. After this warning, Canada has announced a $900 million plan to strengthen border security.
Donkey Root’s confidence is falling
The southern border, i.e. the US-Mexico border, has been used for a long time to enter the US illegally. But in recent years, due to increasing pressure on the Canadian border to the north, illegal activities started increasing there too. Thousands of migrants, a large number of whom were Indians, were using this ‘donkey route’, considering it an easy route between Canada and America. In 2023, about 30,000 Indians tried to enter America through this route, while in 2024 this figure will reach 43,000.
Canada’s strictness, Indians’ difficulties
Following Donald Trump’s warning, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced to increase surveillance on the borders. Now every activity on the border is being closely monitored with the help of drones, helicopters, and sniffer dogs. Canada’s new policy will not only close the ‘Dunkey Route’ but will also eliminate the options for migrants to make the risky journey. This move is a big blow to those Indian families who sell their entire savings and leave in search of a better life in America.
The journey of the danky route is full of dangers.
This journey is not only expensive but also extremely dangerous. Human traffickers charge Rs 40-80 lakh from a person. Migrants often encounter forested areas, rough roads and harsh climates. Incidents like the Patel family dying of cold in 2022 highlight these dangers. Between Canada’s new strict policies and the US’s close monitoring, it is clear that the Donkey Route will no longer be an easy option for achieving the ‘American Dream’.
