in bangladesh Nobel laureate Mohammad Yunus, head of the interim government, has said that general elections can be held in late 2025 or early 2026. Till then only the interim government will run the government of the country. After the removal of Sheikh Hasina, Mohammad Yunus has been made the chief advisor of the interim government. At the same time, the morale of fundamentalists in Bangladesh is high and they are continuously targeting minorities.
Yunus told a TV channel on Monday that the elections will be held only in 2025 or early 2026. Now pressure is increasing on Yunus in Bangladesh regarding the general elections. Sheikh Hasina had come to India after the coup. Yunus said that a lot of reforms need to be done before holding elections. Along with improving the voter list, the electoral process also has to be improved.
Earlier, general elections were held in Bangladesh only on 7 January 2024. Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League had won for the fourth consecutive time. On the occasion of Vijay Diwas, Mohammad Yunusan has put forward a plan regarding the elections. Sheikh Hasina on Sunday made another sharp attack on the head of the country’s interim government, Mohammad Yunus, and accused him of leading an “undemocratic group” which has no accountability towards the people. In a statement on the eve of ‘Victory Day’, Hasina called Yunus a ‘fascist’ and alleged that the main objective of the government led by him is to suppress the spirit of liberation struggle and pro-liberation forces.
Bangladesh celebrates 16 December as Victory Day. On 16 December 1971, General Amir Abdullah Khan Niazi, the then chief of the Pakistani Army, surrendered to the combined forces of the Indian Army and ‘Mukti Bahini’ after a 13-day war with 93,000 soldiers, after which East Pakistan became Bangladesh.
Hasina said in her statement that ‘anti-national groups’ have captured power in an unconstitutional manner. He said, ‘This undemocratic group led by fascist Yunus has no accountability towards the public.’ He said, ‘They are capturing power and obstructing all public welfare works.’
Criticizing the Yunus government, Hasina said that the people of Bangladesh are burdened with rising prices. He said, ‘Since this government is not democratically elected, they have no accountability towards the people. Their main objective is to suppress the spirit and voice of the liberation struggle and pro-liberation forces.
