President Claudia Sheinbaum said Mexico’s Consulates in the US will further improve legal assistance for its citizens to ensure they are informed about their rights and deportation procedures. He said that we are ready to welcome Mexican people to Mexico.
This statement by President Sheinbaum came in response to the continuous threats of mass deportation from America’s newly elected President Donald Trump. Trump has criticized Mexico for not doing enough to stop illegal immigration. “There are rules for sending (citizens) back to Mexico,” Sheinbaum said during a press conference. It is not that the police stops them and then sends them to the border the same day. There are standards and rules that must be followed, and they cannot be deported without reason.”
“We are strengthening the capacity of our consulates in the United States and improving the level of legal assistance,” he said. “The government will provide contact information for consulates so that Mexican citizens can receive assistance in deportation cases.” “We are here to welcome Mexicans to Mexico and prepare everything they need in case they are deported,” Sheinbaum said.
Earlier in November, President Sheinbaum expressed concern over a possible mass deportation of migrants. US President-elect Donald Trump has indicated that this could happen after he takes office. “If deportations happen, we will accept Mexicans, and we have a plan for that,” Sheinbaum said, according to Xinhua news agency.
Expressing his disagreement with migrants being treated like criminals, he said, “That is why institutions of justice exist around the world to protect basic rights. The government is strengthening the network of Mexican consulates in the US to better protect migrants at risk of deportation. Trump, who will be sworn in on January 20, 2025, has threatened to take tougher measures to stem the flow of illegal immigrants at the US-Mexico border.
