After the government directed telecom operators to stop the spread of spam calls and messages, Bharti Airtel said it blocked 8 billion spam calls and 800 million spam calls within two and a half months of launching its AI-powered, spam-fighting solution. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) had asked telecom operators to follow its directive regarding stopping spam calls and messages and whitelisting of URLs, APKs and OTT links.
In this regard, Airtel in September launched an AI-powered spam detection solution that provides customers with real-time information about suspicious spam calls and SMS.
Six percent of all calls on the Airtel network have been identified as spam calls, while 2 percent of all SMS have also been identified as spam.
“Interestingly, it was observed that 35 percent of spammers used landline telephones,” Airtel said in its report.
Additionally, customers in Delhi have received the highest number of spam calls, followed by customers in Andhra Pradesh and Western Uttar Pradesh.
Similarly, maximum number of spam calls have come from Delhi, followed by Mumbai and Karnataka.
In case of SMS, the highest number came from Gujarat, followed by Kolkata and Uttar Pradesh and the maximum number of targeted customers were from Mumbai, Chennai and Gujarat.

The company said, “Spam calls start at 9 am and their number gradually increases as the day progresses. “Spam activity peaks between 12 noon and 3 pm, when the volume of spam calls is highest.”
The government has allotted 10 digit numbers with 160 prefix for service and transaction related calls. Additionally, customers who have not opted for Do-Not-Disturb (DND) and have subscribed to receive promotional calls will continue to receive calls from a 10-digit number with the 140 prefix.
According to the government, registered complaints of unregistered senders and spam calls/SMS dropped to 1.51 lakh in October, marking a 20 percent decline from August.
According to the company, over the last 2.5 months, the AI-powered spam detection solution alerted nearly 252 million customers about these suspicious calls. The company has found that the number of customers answering these calls has declined by 12 percent.
