Iran has announced more strict action against women not wearing hijab. The Iranian government has announced a treatment facility for women who do not follow the country’s mandatory hijab rules. However, the government’s decision has been openly condemned by human rights groups and Iranian women. Mehri Talebi Darstani, head of the Tehran headquarters’ women and family department, said the clinic would provide “scientific and psychological treatment for removing the hijab.”
The women said that it would be a jail and not a clinic.
After the announcement by the Iranian government, women have termed it as promoting fear and anger. The Iranian women said it would not be a clinic, it would be a prison. We are struggling to make ends meet and there are power cuts but a piece of clothing is the only thing this state is concerned about. If there’s a time for us all to get back on the streets, that time is now or they’ll shut us all down.
Government became active after student’s hijab violation in university
Actually, this announcement was made after the report of a university student. The student, who was arrested for taking off her clothes on campus after allegedly facing harassment by security guards for hijab violation, was shifted to a psychiatric hospital.
Amnesty International expresses concern over forced medication and torture
Following the decision of the Iranian government, various human rights organizations including Amnesty International have expressed concern. In fact, they believe that under the cover of regulations, Iranian authorities will use forced medication and torture against protesters and dissidents considered mentally unstable. Sima Sabet, an Iranian journalist living in Britain, said: The idea of setting up clinics to ‘cure’ veiled women is scary, where people are isolated from society simply because they do not conform to the ruling ideology . Human rights lawyer Hossein Raisi criticized the clinic idea, saying it was neither Islamic nor in line with Iranian law.
