All the teams have submitted the IPL 2025 retention list to BCCI. Mahendra Singh Dhoni will be seen playing this season also. CSK has retained Dhoni as an uncapped player. Mumbai Indians have also retained Rohit Sharma in the team.

Whereas Delhi did not retain Captain Pant and Lucknow Super Giants did not retain Captain Rahul. Both the players will participate in the mega auction. Shreyas Iyer has not been retained by his old franchise. Now star players will participate in the mega auction. Shami and David Miller’s relationship with Gujarat Titans has broken.

Rishabh Pant in mega auction

Rishabh Pant will be a prominent name in the 2025 IPL mega auction as Delhi Capitals (DC) has not retained him. According to reports, discussions between DC owners and Pant continued for several months but no agreement could be reached. DC has retained four players. These include Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, South African batsman Tristan Stubbs, and uncapped Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Abhishek Porel.

Now Delhi Capitals have a chance to buy Pant

DC will have two Right to Match (RTM) cards in the auction and will try to buy back Pant. Pant has been a vital part of the franchise since 2016 and takes over the captaincy in 2022. If they can’t buy him back, they will have to appoint a new captain. With the retention of three capped and one uncapped player, DC’s auction purse will be reduced by at least Rs 47 crore, leaving them with Rs 73 crore.

Internal disagreement regarding captaincy

Axar has been with DC since 2019, Kuldeep joined in 2022, and Porel in 2023. Pant’s retention was expected, but things could not work out due to internal disagreements regarding his captaincy. Kiran Grandhi of GMR Group and Parth Jindal of JSW Sports met Pant, but no agreement could be reached.

Pant’s record as captain of Delhi

Pant became the fifth-youngest captain of the IPL in 2021 and led DC in 44 matches between 2021 and 2024, including 24 wins and 19 losses. He scored 1205 runs as captain, with an average of 35.44 and strike rate of 143.96. The upcoming auction will be important for Pant’s future.
