ATM hacked by installing device, fake helpline number pasted in the booth, fraud of more than one lakh by taking customer details

A unique case of ATM machine hacking has come to light in the capital. Hackers installed such a device in the ATM machine, due to which the card got held in the machine itself. After this, to commit the fraud, they pasted a sticker of a fake helpline number in the ATM. When the card did not come out of the machine, when the consumers called that number, some basic information was taken from them and then instructions were given to enter the ATM PIN in the machine.

The thing to be noted here is that the consumers were only asked to enter the PIN in the machine, they were not asked for the PIN. After entering the correct PIN, the card came out of the ATM machine, but later the money was deducted from the consumer’s account.

When the employees reached ICICI Bank’s ATM machine at Manisha Market in Shahpura late on Thursday night to maintain it, they found a device inside the machine along with four ATM cards lying inside it. He informed this to Chunabhatti police station. Two victims of fraud using this ATM went to the police station on Friday and lodged a complaint.

Two ATM booths were tampered with

Chunabhatti police station in-charge Bhupendra Kaur said that complaints were received about malfunctions in two ATM machines of Manisha Market at around 9.30 pm on Thursday night. When the police reached the spot, paper was stuck at the card inserter in the SBI machine, while four cards were found in the ICICI Bank ATM machine next to it. A device with four cells was also found.

Two elderly people became victims of fraud

A fake helpline number sticker was also pasted in the ATM booth to assist consumers. Police started investigation on the basis of CCTV. On Friday evening, two consumers also reached the police station with a complaint. 81 year old Dinesh Dave was defrauded of Rs 45 thousand and 76 year old CS Dave was defrauded of Rs 1 lakh.

Both of them told that earlier their ATM got stuck in the machine, whereas when they called the helpline number given for help, they told their name and also entered the PIN in the machine, due to which the ATM came out. We did not receive any transaction message that day. When we received a message about deduction of money at around 4 pm on Friday evening, we complained. The bank says that every day more than five lakh rupees are withdrawn from here. In such a situation, the amount of fraud can increase even further.
