Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a three-day US visit. During this time he will participate in the Quad Summit meeting. Also, he will meet US President Joe Biden. Since becoming the Prime Minister in 2014, Narendra Modi has visited the US several times. He visited the US in 2014 when Barack Obama was the President there. An anecdote related to that visit has now come to light. In fact, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had told the then US President Barack Obama that the size of his limousine car is almost as big as the house in which his (Modi’s) mother lives. India’s envoy to the United Nations Vinay Kwatra gave this information.
Kwatra said this helped develop a deeper bond between the two leaders who have humble backgrounds. Former foreign secretary Kwatra told ‘Modi Story’, a social media handle that details events related to the Prime Minister, that the conversation between the two leaders took place when they were going together to the Martin Luther King Jr. memorial after formal talks.
Kwatra said that when Modi sat with Obama in his limousine for the 10-12 minute journey, the two talked about family. In a friendly conversation, Obama asked about Modi’s mother. Smiling, the Prime Minister gave a candid and unexpected answer, “President Obama, you may not believe it, but the size of your car is almost the size of the house in which my mother lives.”
Kwatra was present as a translator during this visit. Kwatra said that Modi’s talk surprised the US President. He said that this gave him a glimpse of Modi’s simple upbringing. This was Modi’s first visit to the US after becoming the Prime Minister in the year 2014. Modi’s mother passed away in 2022. She lived in her old house in Gujarat.
