The government of pro-China President of Maldives Mohammad Muizzu said on Tuesday that two ministers who made derogatory comments against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi have resigned. Mohammad Muizzu had suspended three of his ministers who made comments against PM Modi in January this year. The news of the ministers’ resignation has come at a time when Muizzu, who has gone to Beijing’s camp, is once again trying to build relations with New Delhi. In this connection, he is scheduled to visit India soon. Maldives government spokesperson Heena Waleed has said that President Mohammad Muizzu is going to visit India on an official visit very soon.
Earlier, the President of Maldives usually used to make an official visit to India soon after assuming office, but Muizzu, who is friendly with China, has not yet made an official visit to India. Regarding the possible visit, Waleed said, ‘As you know, such visits are scheduled for the most convenient time for the leaders of both the countries. Discussions are going on about this.’
Indications from the resignation of ministers
Waleed’s announcement of Muizzu’s upcoming visit comes on the same day that two junior ministers Maryam Shiuna and Malsha Sharif resigned from their posts. News agency AFP quoted a government as saying that both have resigned citing personal reasons. However, the resignations coming before the announcement of the President’s visit are a sign that the Muizzu government is serious about building relations with India.
Commented against PM Modi
However, no information has been given yet about the third minister, who was suspended in January. The ministers who resigned had criticized PM Modi on social media. PM Modi had visited the Indian territory Lakshadweep and praised it as a place promoting tourism. After this, three Maldivian ministers spewed venom against PM Modi. The social media posts of the ministers were criticized by Indian celebrities and a call was given to boycott tourism of Maldives.
