The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday said that the low pressure area in the Bay of Bengal has now turned into a depression. According to the IMD bulletin, the depression is located about 310 km east of Kalingapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), 260 km east-southeast of Gopalpur (Odisha), 290 km south-southeast of Paradip (Odisha) and 410 km south of Digha (West Bengal).
The bulletin said that the weather system is expected to move towards north Odisha and West Bengal coasts during the next 24 hours and intensify into a deep depression. Thereafter, it is forecast to move towards the Gangetic areas of North Odisha adjoining West Bengal, Jharkhand and northern parts of adjoining Chhattisgarh during the next two days.
The weather office has issued an ‘orange’ alert (be prepared) forecasting heavy to very heavy rains at isolated places in Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Malkangiri and Koraput districts of Odisha on Sunday. A ‘yellow’ alert (stay updated) has been issued forecasting heavy rains at isolated places in Kendrapara, Khurda, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Nayagarh, Kandhamal, Kalahandi and Nabarangpur districts on Sunday.
The IMD has forecast rain in most parts of the state on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The IMD has said that due to the effect of a possible depression, strong surface winds ranging from 40-50 kmph to 60 kmph are forecast along the northwest Bay of Bengal and Odisha coasts adjoining west central Bay of Bengal during September 8-11.
Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea along and off Odisha coasts, northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining west central Bay of Bengal during this period.
