Who will be the new chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC)? The suspense is now over. Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Jay Shah has become the new boss of the ICC. He has been elected unopposed. He will replace Greg Barclay, whose term is going to end on November 30. Barclay recently withdrew from the race for the post of chairman. 35-year-old Shah will take charge on December 1. He has created history. He is the youngest chairman of the ICC.

ICC chairman has so many tenures

India’s dominance in the ICC has once again increased. Shah is the fifth Indian to become the ICC chairman. Before him, Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N Srinivasan and Shashank Manohar have been the boss of the ICC. It was believed that Shah had the support of 15 out of 16 members of the ICC board. Tuesday (August 27) was the last date for filing nominations for the post of chairman. The ICC chairman is eligible for three terms of two years each and New Zealand’s Barclay has completed four years so far.

Shah will have to leave the post of BCCI secretary

According to ICC rules, the election of the chairman has 17 votes and a simple majority of 9 votes (51%) is required for the winner. Earlier, the outgoing person had to have a two-thirds majority to become the chairman. Shah has been one of the most influential faces in the ICC board. He is currently the head of the ICC’s powerful Finance and Commercial Affairs Sub-Committee. He became the chairman of this sub-committee in 2022. Shah will now have to leave the post of BCCI Secretary which he has held since 2019. The board’s general meeting will be held next month or in October.

This is what you will have to do to return to BCCI

Shah currently has one year left in his term as BCCI secretary. The mandatory three-year ‘cooling off period’ for Shah to return to the BCCI will begin after his term ends in October 2025. As per the BCCI constitution approved by the Supreme Court, an office-bearer can hold office for six years before the three-year cooling off period kicks in. Overall, a person can hold office for a total of 18 years – nine in a state association and nine in the BCCI. Shah has four years left in the BCCI after moving to the ICC.
