March today in protest against Kolkata incident, 6000 policemen deployed to stop them; fortifications


Heavy security arrangements have been made for the protest march to Nabanno Abhijan in Kolkata today in view of the possibility of violence during protests in the city. Nabanno is the secretariat of the West Bengal government from where the state government functions. It houses the offices of the Chief Minister and other top ministers and officials. An unregistered organisation claiming to be a student organisation has announced a protest march to the state secretariat to demand justice for the August 9 rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College.

At the same time, the police say that they smell a conspiracy in this protest march. The police have said that a conspiracy is being hatched to spread anarchy in West Bengal by misusing the anger of the citizens. Kolkata Police claims that they have information that a prominent person, one of the persons who organized the “Nabanna Abhijan” has met a political party leader in a five star hotel. The police also claim that they have intelligence that a conspiracy is being hatched to create large-scale anarchy in this march by provoking the police to use force.

More than 6,000 policemen will be deployed

NDTV quoted a top official as saying that more than 6,000 policemen will be deployed to maintain law and order and 19 places have been identified for barricading. About 26 Deputy Commissioners of Police will be deployed in different areas. There will be heavy deployment at places like Hastings, Furlong Gate, Strand Road and Howrah and barricading will start at 8 am. Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress has targeted the BJP over the organization of “Nabanna Abhijan”. The BJP has claimed that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has resorted to police under pressure.

Special arrangements for students appearing for UGC Net exam

Meanwhile, the police said that they have made special arrangements for the students appearing for the UGC NET exam to reach their exam centres. The police said that it is a matter of concern that an organisation claiming to be a student organisation is planning to interfere on the day when thousands of students are scheduled to take the exam at centres in the city.
