Major police reshuffle in Dhaka, heads of 32 police stations in the city transferred; powers taken away

After the removal of the Sheikh Hasina-led government in Bangladesh, there has been a massive reshuffle in the police department. A few days after the transfer of 18 officers-in-charge, the heads of 32 police stations in Dhaka have been transferred. This information was given in a media report on Monday. According to the news portal bdnews24.com, the transfer order came on Sunday midnight. With the latest transfer, the heads of all 50 police stations under the Dhaka Metropolitan Police have been transferred. The other 18 officers-in-charge were transferred on August 13. According to the report, those transferred will no longer have the powers they had as chiefs.

These officers have been sent to training centres across the country, where they have been tasked with training police personnel. Others have been transferred to the tourist police, armed police battalions or industrial police. There has been a reshuffle at all levels in the police since Sheikh Hasina stepped down from the post of Prime Minister on August 5. 76-year-old Hasina resigned from the post of Prime Minister and went to India after massive protests by students against the controversial quota system in government jobs. After this, an interim government was formed in the country, and 84-year-old Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus was appointed its chief advisor.

According to the news, 51 policemen, including three additional IGs, were replaced in three separate notices issued by the Public Security Division of the Home Ministry on August 13. On Saturday, 13 officers of the rank of Additional Deputy Commissioner and Assistant Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) were transferred out of the city. This was followed by the appointment of seven other officers to the posts of DMP Deputy Commissioner on the same day. On Sunday, 73 police officers were promoted to the rank of Deputy Inspector General and 31 of them were promoted from the rank of Superintendent of Police, getting double promotion. More than 230 people were killed in incidents of violence that erupted across the country after the fall of the Hasina-led Awami League government. With this, the death toll has risen to more than 600 since the protests started by students in mid-July. According to the police headquarters, at least 44 policemen have been killed in the clashes.
