Cricketer-turned-politician Harbhajan Singh wrote a two-page letter to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressing his grief over the delay in getting justice to the Kolkata rape and murder victim. He also appealed for swift and decisive action on this case.
A shameful incident that happened in Kolkata on 9th August has shaken the entire country. There is anger and protest brewing in the minds of all the countrymen. This letter of Harbhajan reflects the same sorrow and anger, because almost 9 days have passed since this incident but the culprits are still out of the reach of the law.
Today is the 9th day (18th August) of the nationwide doctors’ protest against the rape-murder case of a trainee doctor in Kolkata. Harbhajan Singh made a special appeal to CM Mamata Banerjee on the incident of rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor. What happened to the daughter of the country in Kolkata was very wrong. We all should come forward to get her justice, instead of making it a political issue. I request all the officials that the daughter should get justice in this case as soon as possible, because she is no longer in this world, but we do not want that any such thing happens in the future which makes us bow our heads in shame.
I just want to say to the President, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Mamta Didi, all the leaders and senior officials that this is the time when we should make such a rule that will scare the people who do such heinous acts. They should have the fear in their minds that if they do this then what will the law do to them.
Harbhajan wrote, “The safety and dignity of women cannot be compromised. The perpetrators of this heinous crime must face the full punishment of the law and the punishment must be exemplary. Only in this way can we begin to restore faith in our system and ensure that such an incident does not happen again and we create a society where every woman feels safe and protected. We must ask ourselves – if not now, then when? I think, now is the time for action.”
