Big update in the rape-murder case of a female doctor, CBI takes over the investigation

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday took over the investigation into the rape and murder of a woman doctor at a government medical college in Kolkata, officials said. The agency completed all the formalities within hours of the Calcutta High Court order directing the state police to hand over the case documents to the CBI. A team of CBI officials from Delhi along with forensic and medical experts will reach Kolkata on Wednesday, they said.

Earlier in the day, the High Court had directed the state police to hand over the case diary to the CBI by 10 am on Wednesday. The body of the trainee doctor who was raped and murdered in the seminary of the government RG Kar Hospital was recovered on Friday morning. A person was arrested on Saturday in this connection. The preliminary post-mortem report has revealed that she was sexually assaulted and murdered.

Politics heated up over the matter

At the same time, senior BJP leader Shubhendu Adhikari on Tuesday praised the decision to hand over the investigation of the case from the police to the CBI. He demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for her alleged failure to ensure the safety of women doctors in state hospitals. Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly Adhikari appealed to the common people to take to the streets to demand the resignation of Banerjee, who also handles the state’s Home and Health departments. He said that BJP MLAs would sit on a dharna in Kolkata on August 14 to pressurize their demand.
