The gold medalist of the World Archery Para Championship held in South Korea, Toman Kumar, lost his leg in a deadly IED blast during a 2022 anti -Naxal campaign in Chhattisgarh, but he moved towards success by overcome the challenges after this.
The 30 -year -old constable of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has so far won seven medals in the International and National Para Archery Tournament. He won the men’s compound competition on Saturday at the World Archery Para Championship held in Guangju, South Korea.
Toman was part of a unit of CRPF which was appointed one of the most Naxal violence affected areas of the country in South Bastar region. But in February 2022, Toman was injured in the explosion during a heavy firing between CRPF and Naxalites.
A senior CRPF official said that he was seriously injured in this, causing him to cut his left leg on 12 February 2022. He said, “Toman Kumar joined CRPF in 2017 and when he was only 26 years old. But in this encounter in February in Bastar, a part of the body was lost. But despite this, he never looked back. ”
The official said that he joined the National Divyang Empowerment Center (NCDE), a special CRPF center, which was opened in 2020 for the soldiers who faced physically disability. He said that Toman began practice of para archery in November 2023 and in September 2024, he was included in the Central (Main) team of CRPF in September 2024. In addition to three national competitions, Toman has participated in four international tournaments including Guangju.
