Veteran tennis star Venus Williams is going to return to the Grand Slam tennis after a two -year gap. The 45 -year -old American player received a wild card invitation to play in the singles matches of the US Open on Wednesday. According to the International Tennis Federation, she will be the oldest singles player playing in the tournament after Renee Richards (47 years) in 1981.

Williams has already been given a wild card for the Mixed Doubles matches to be held next week to Williams. Singles matches will begin on August 24 in New York. Venus has a seven Grand Slam singles titles, including the US Open 2000 and 2001 win. Apart from this, she has also won 14 women doubles titles and two mixed doubles titles with her younger sister Serena Williams. Serena has retired with 23 Grand Slam singles titles after the US Open.

Venus last played the Grand Slam at the 2023 US Open, where she lost in the first round. His last singles match at the US Open won in 2019. Last year, he underwent surgery of uterine fibroids and missed almost the entire season. She returned to court after 16 months in Washington in July and played for the first time after the March 2024 Miami Open. Here she won a tour-level singles match as the oldest female player after Martina Navratriva in 2004 Wimbledon.

In Washington, Venus made headlines not only with his game but also a funny comment for engagement with the Italian actor and health insurance. Washington tournament chairman Mark Ann said, “I was surprised, but it was a great surprise that she still wanted to play.”

Venus also participated in the Cincinnati Open with a wild card last week, but was out in the first round of singles. In New York, she will play mixed doubles with American player Riley Opelka on 19-20 August.

Those who get wild cards for women’s singles include the US Clarvi Nagono, Juliata Pareja, Katy McNaly, Valerie Gloseman and Elisa on, France’s Caroline Garcia (who will play the last Grand Slam of her career) and Australia’s Talia Gibson.
