Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from the post of Vice President.
Jagdeep Dhankhar became the third Vice President to resign from the post in the middle of his tenure on Monday. Earlier, VV Giri resigned as Vice President, who took the post of acting President after the death of the then President Zakir Hussain on 3 May 1969.
VV Giri resigned as Vice President on July 2, 1969 and contested the presidential election as an independent candidate. He was the first Vice President to not complete his term.
He also resigned from the post of Vice President
Bhairon Singh Shekhawat resigned as Vice President on 21 July 2007 after losing the presidential election against Congress -led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) candidate Pratibha Patil. After Shekhawat’s resignation, the post of Vice President remained vacant for 21 days, after which Mohammad Hamid Ansari was elected to the post.
Vice Presidents R Venkatarman, Shankar Dayal Sharma and KR Narayanan also resigned from their posts, but after being elected President. Krishnakant was the only Vice President who died while holding the post. He breathed his last on 27 July 2002.
Capted health reasons
Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigned from his post citing health reasons. In his resignation sent to President Draupadi Murmu, Dhankhar said that he is leaving the post to give priority to health care. Dhankhar said in a letter to the President that to give priority to health care and to follow medical advice, I am resigning from the post of Vice President of India with immediate effect, according to Article 67 (A) of the Constitution.
Dhankar became Vice President in 2022
Jagdeep Dhankhar (74) took over as Vice President in August 2022 and his term was till 2027. The resignation of the Rajya Sabha Chairman Dhankhar came on the first day of the monsoon session of Parliament. Recently he had an angioplasty at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi and was admitted to the hospital for a few days in March this year. On some occasions, his condition did not look right, but he often looked energetic in public programs including Parliament.
During his tenure as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, Dhankhar had a several confrontation with the opposition, who had also proposed to impeach them. The proposal to remove them, later rejected by Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh. This proposal was the first case of removing a current Vice President in independent India.
Resignation during tenure
He is the third Vice President of India to resign during his term after VV Giri and R Venkataraman. Giri and Venkataraman resigned from the post of Vice President to contest the presidential election. According to the rules, it is necessary for the post of Vice President to hold elections within the next six months. However, the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha can conduct the proceedings of the House till the new Vice President is elected.
Congress raised questions on resignation
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh posted on X, the sudden resignation of the Vice President and the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha is as shocking, the more than understanding. Ramesh said that Dhankar had decided a meeting of the work advisory committee at 1 pm on Tuesday afternoon. The Congress leader said that he (Dhankar) had to make some big announcements related to the judiciary. In his resignation, Dhankar thanked President Draupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and all MPs for supporting during his tenure.
