Decision in 2006 Mumbai local train blast case
On Monday, the Bombay High Court, while giving a big verdict in the 2006 Mumbai local train blast case, has termed all the 11 convicts innocent and acquitted. This decision is Justice Anil Killor and Justice S.K. Yes. Chandak’s bench narrated. In this case, a total of 12 accused were first convicted by the lower court, out of which 5 were hanged and 7 were sentenced to life imprisonment. However, 11 convicts have been acquitted during the hearing in the High Court, while one accused had already died.
According to sources, the final hearing of this case was completed in January this year, after which the verdict was reserved. The culprits had registered their presence in the court through video conferencing from Jervada, Nashik, Amravati and Nagpur jails.
In this horrific bomb blast in 2006, there were explosions at seven places in Mumbai’s local trains, in which 189 people were killed and 824 people were injured. In this case, in the year 2015, a total of 12 accused were convicted by the Special Court, out of which 5 were hanged and 7 were sentenced to life imprisonment. Those who were sentenced to death included Mohammad Faisal Sheikh, Ehtasham Siddiki, Naved Hussain Khan, Asif Khan and Kamal Ansari. The accused named Kamal Ansari died in jail in 2022 due to Covid‑19.
The defense had alleged that the confessions filed under the MCOCA Act were obtained from ‘forced’ and ‘torture’ and therefore illegal. On the other hand, the state tried to prove that it is a rare of the rarest case and the punishment is justified.
