Indvseng 2nd Test: Shubman Gill broke Sunil Gavaskar’s record of scoring the most runs for India in a Test match

Shubman Gill became the 37th Test captain of the country earlier this year and during his first series as an Indian captain, this young player has made a big name for himself as a batsman. He scored 269 runs in 387 balls during the first innings of the second Test match in Birmingham and scored 85 runs in the third innings.

After scoring 75 runs in the third innings, where he hit Shoaib Bashir in the 53rd over, Gill made history as he set a record of scoring the most runs in the longest format for Main in Blue. He surpassed Sunil Gavaskar’s record. In the Test match against the West Indies in 1971, Gavaskar scored 344 runs in the longest format and has scored 345 runs in his bag.

Gavaskar scored 124 runs in the first innings and 220 runs in the second innings. 10 times nine Indian batsmen have scored more than 300 runs in the longest format, where Gill is at the top in the list. Former England captain Graham Gooch holds the record for scoring the most runs in the longest format.

In 1990, Gooch scored 456 runs in a Test match against India at Lord’s. He scored 333 runs in the first innings and 123 runs in the second innings. Apart from Gooch, Mark Taylor (426) of Australia, Kumar Sangakkara (424) of Sri Lanka and Brian Lara (400) of West Indies are part of this list.

If Gill, who became the first Asian Test captain to score a double century in the country, score a century in the third innings, then he will match the elite record of Gavaskar. Gavaskar is the only Indian batsman to score a century and double century in the longest format.
