India Foreign Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar has responded by the US (US) to impose a 500% tariff on Buying by the US (US) Oil. He said that India will take appropriate steps on this issue when it will come out.
Jaishankar described it as “crossing the bridge”, which means that India will take a concrete stand in this matter only when the situation is clear. Jaishankar is on a four -day visit to the US. During this time, he made it clear that India has expressed concern about his energy security in front of the US MP, which has introduced a 500% fee charge bill on the countries of Russia.
Jaishankar said in a press conference held in Washington, “We track them very closely,” if we are in the interest of India or can affect it. ” He said that the Government of India and the Indian Embassy are in touch with American Republican Senator Lindsay Graham. Graham is the same senator who has introduced this strict bill.
While presenting the bill, he had specially alleged that these countries together are buying 70% of Putin oil. Jaishankar said, “I think we have clearly shared our energy security concerns and interests with Graham. Now it has to be seen how far this bill progresses. When the time comes, we will cross that bridge.”
Trump’s support became a new challenge
The support of former US President Donald Trump is making this bill more complex. President Trump has supported this bill. The bill demands imposing 500% import duty on countries that are still trading from Russia- these include India and China. Experts believe that this bill is part of the US strategy through which it wants to pressurize Russia to negotiate the Ukraine war. If this bill is passed, exports from India to America may be badly affected. The 500% fee will prove to be a major setback for Indian trade.
Race for trade agreement
Meanwhile, India and America are working rapidly towards finalizing a trade agreement. The purpose of this agreement is to avoid the 26% counter -tariffs declared by Trump in April. If this agreement is reached, Indian exporters can get great relief in the US.
India’s rising oil purchases from Russia
India’s procurement of crude oil from Russia is continuously increasing. In May 2025, the import reached 1.96 million barrels per day, the highest in the last 10 months. Now the situation is that India has started buying more oil from West Asian countries from Russia. The trend began from February 2022 when Russia attacked Ukraine and Western countries imposed several restrictions on Russia. After this, Russia started selling oil to countries like India and China at concessional rates, which was taken by Indian refineries. India currently fulfills 40-45% of its energy requirements with crude oil, with Russia’s share rapidly.
