The monsoon has now taken the form of terrible destruction in the northeastern states. In Assam, Manipur, Sikkim and Arunachal (Arunachal) regions (IN) heavy rains, floods and (&) landslides have caused severe havoc.
The Indian Meteorological Department has warned of heavy rain till June 6. Due to this, there is no relief at the moment. This disaster has killed 34 people so far. Thousands of people have become homeless. Many villages have been submerged in water. Roads, bridges and electricity lines are broken.
Things are bad in Assam
The situation is the worst in Assam. Till Sunday, more than 78,000 people in 15 districts were badly affected by floods. 10 rivers including Brahmaputra are flowing above the danger mark. Landslides in Guwahati killed people. Floods in Ghunsuti area of Lakhimpur submerged many villages.
Assam Minister Jayant Mallabarua announced a compensation of four lakh rupees for the victims. 28,317 people have taken shelter in relief camps. But it is becoming difficult to help in many areas. Silchar recorded 42 cm of rain. Karimganj received 35 cm of rain. 30 cm of rain in Halakandi caused havoc.
Constant rains in Manipur and Sikkim
The city of Imphal in Manipur is submerged in water. It has been raining continuously since 31 May. The Imphal River and the Nambul river are above the danger mark. More than 3800 people are affected. 883 houses have been damaged. Security forces evacuated many people. 1500 tourists in Sikkim are stranded in the northern region. A train washed away in the Teesta River in Mangan district. 8 people are missing in this. One died.
Nine killed in Arunachal Pradesh
In Arunachal Pradesh, 9 people died due to landslides and floods. On Sunday, the Indian Air Force rescued 14 people stranded in the Bomjir River. This area is in the Lower Dibang Valley. A car was swept away in floods. 7 people were killed in this. Kibithu received 17 cm of rain. Hyuliang recorded 15 cm of rain. Many roads are closed due to landslides. The villages are cut from the main area.
The devastation of Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura
6 people died in Meghalaya. 6 people were killed in Mizoram too. A hotel in Mizoram collapsed due to landslide. 3 Myanmar citizens were killed in this. 1300 families are affected in Tripura. Chief Minister Manik Saha instructed to take people to safe places. There is a warning of heavy rain till 4 June.
Central government in action
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday spoke to the Chief Ministers of Assam, Manipur, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh. He assured all possible help. Shah said that the Modi government is standing firmly with the people of the Northeast. Relief and rescue operations have been intensified. Army and disaster management teams are working.
No relief
The Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rains till 6 June. From 1 to 5 June, strong rains, storms and lightning are expected to fall. Rainfall may decrease on 5 and 6 June. But it has been advised to be vigilant. The change in the moom has caused heavy damage to the infrastructure and has caused dangerous boom in the Teesta River, which has severely affected the rescue and withdrawal operations.
Due to the rising water level and the strong streams of the river, many avenues were also washed away. Officials said that about 1,500 tourists were stranded in North Sikkim due to heavy rains in Mangan district for the third consecutive day on Sunday. He said that two bridges were partially damaged due to bad weather.
A landslide has occurred near Neemchen Premlakha in Eastern Sikkim. Officials said that passengers have been advised to be vigilant and ensure safe travel. He said that due to road connectivity disruptions, about 112 tourists in Lachen and 1,350 tourists in Lachung are stranded. A heavy machinery of the Border Roads Organization (BRO) has been deployed to clean the road from Lachung to Chungthang and Chungthang to Thang Tunnel.
A major landslide in Thing initially blocked the road, but now it is being told that it has been cleaned till Shipgare near GREF camp. However, officials said that a large stone is still yet to be removed a few hundred meters ahead of the camp.
Another official said that due to heavy rains, the Fidang bridge located in the Dzongu area was damaged due to the rapid flow in the Teesta River. “The flow of the river has destroyed its base, which can affect the structural stability of the bridge,” he said.
Officials said that the Sangakalang Bailey Bridge connecting Mangan to Chungthang has also been partially damaged due to the flow of the Teesta River. An official said that the condition of the bridge is very bad and now it is no longer safe for public use. He said that the monsoon rains have intensified, due to which the river Teesta has come in spate, on which this bridge is built.

Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi said, “The news of heavy rains in the northeastern states including Assam, Arunachal is extremely tragic. Millions of people are affected by the floods. God should protect everyone. There is an appeal to the Central and State Governments to speed up relief and rescue operations, so that people have to be affected by the minimum.
