Recently, on 21 May 2025, Nambala Keshav Rao alias Basavaraj, general secretary of Naxalite organization CPI (Maoist), was killed in a large encounter in Narayanpur district of Chhattisgarh, which was a total reward of Rs 10 crore. However, many other dreaded Naxalites like Madavi Hidma are still absconding and remain a big challenge for security forces.
Naxalites challenged security system in Odisha
The campaign of security forces against the Naxalites is going on, while on the other hand, Naxalites have carried out a major incident in Raukela district of Odisha. They looted a truck, with explosives.
One and a half tonnes of explosives were in robbed truck
According to the information, the looted truck had about one and a half tons of explosives. The truck was going towards Banco stone mining via Cableng police station area of Raukela. Naxalites stopped the truck and took the driver hostage and took the truck to the dense forest of Saranda. After this incident, Jharkhand and Odisha police have been fully alerted.
Search operation of security forces started
Police said the driver was released a few hours later, but no detection of trucks and explosives has been detected so far. In view of the seriousness of the case, a large -scale search operation has been started in the Saranda forest area. However, the security forces are facing difficulty in search operations due to the area’s sensitivity and dense forest.
According to the information, about one and a half tonnes of explosive material was loaded in the truck. The truck was going towards the Banko stone quarry via Cableng police station area of Rourkela. Meanwhile, the Naxalites stopped the truck and took the driver hostage and forcibly took the truck to the dense forest of Saranda in Jharkhand and looted the explosives including the truck. However, the truck driver was released a few hours later.
Since the incident, Jharkhand and Odisha police are completely on alert. So far no clue of trucks and explosives has been found. In view of the seriousness of the case, a large -scale search operation was started in the Saranda forest area at night. But due to the sensitivity of the area, the dense forest and night time, the security forces faced difficulties in the search operation.
Questions raised on police security system
This incident has once again raised questions on the security system of the police and administration. It is noteworthy that about 15 years ago, the Naxalites in the same area carried out the incident of robbing the explosive -laden vehicle. Such incidents remain a challenge for the security forces, and need to take concrete steps to deal with them.
Action of security forces against Naxalites
In Chhattisgarh, in 2025, there were many major operations against Naxalites. 27 Naxalites were killed in the encounter held on 21 May 2025 in Narayanpur, including big names like Basavaraj. 113 Naxalites were killed, 104 were arrested in Bijapur and Kanker, and 164 surrendered.
In Jharkhand, 1490 Naxalites have been arrested from 2021 to 2025. A special campaign is going on against Naxalites in the forests of Saranda, which aims to completely eliminate Naxalism by 2026. In May 2025, 5 Naxalites were arrested in Gadchiroli, Maharashtra, who had a total reward of Rs 36 lakh.
Madavi Hidma is a major commander of Naxalites, on which a reward ranging from 45 lakh to 1 crore is declared. Apart from that, Naxalites like Aseem Mandal, Patiram Manjhi, and Misir Besra in Jharkhand have a reward of Rs 1-1 crore, while Sujata and other commanders have rewards ranging from 25 lakh to 2 lakh rupees.
Security forces have intensified their action against Naxalism, and a target has been set to end Naxalism by 2026. However, the secret activities of Naxalites like Hidma and their presence in the forests are still a big challenge.
