Why was this decision taken?
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has taken this decision to stop cyber fraud and technical disturbances. When a mobile number is not used for a long time, telecom companies allot it to another customer. In such a situation, if the bank account connected to the old number remains active, then the risk of fraud increases. To prevent this, NPCI has instructed banks and UPI apps to remove inactive mobile numbers from their system.
There may be a problem in UPI payment
For UPI transaction, it is necessary to link your mobile number to a bank account. If your number is closed and you have not updated it, then after April 1 you will not be able to make UPI payment.
How to avoid this problem?
If you want your UPI payment to continue without any interruption, then you have to follow these important steps:
- Check the mobile number link to your bank account. If the number is closed or old, update immediately.
- Contact your telecom provider (Jio, Airtel, VI, BSNL) and confirm that the number is still registered in your name.
- If your number is closed and someone else is allotted, then go to the bank and link the new number.
NPCI will update data every week
NPCI has instructed all banks and UPI apps to update the list of inactive numbers every week. This means that if your number is not active for a long time, it can be removed from the record of the bank automatically. So always keep your number active and updated.

- Log in to your bank’s Netbanking or Mobile Banking app and see the registered mobile number.
- Go to Google Pay, PhonePe or Paytm and verify the linked number there.
- If the number is closed, then complete the process of linking the new number immediately.
