Prime Minister Narendra Modi can visit Sri Lanka in the first week of April at the invitation of Sri Lankan President Anura Kumar Disanayake. Local media gave this information on Wednesday. PM Modi’s possible visit is expected to speed up public-focused partnership between the two neighboring countries with the strength in India-Sri Lanka relations. It is believed that Prime Minister Modi can reach Colombo while returning from Thailand.

In Bangkok, the sixth event of ‘Bay Bay of Bengal Multiple Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) Summit’ will be held from 2 to 4 April. Disanayake invited Prime Minister Modi to visit Sri Lanka ‘soon as per his convenience’ during a three -day visit to India in December. This was Disanayake’s first foreign trip after taking over in September 2024. The two leaders during their discussions agreed to deepen bilateral relations between India and Sri Lanka countries and make relations friendly.

Disanayake called his visit to India quite ‘successful’. He emphasized that he had a ‘meaningful discussion’ with the Indian leadership and the business community during the visit. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has visited Sri Lanka three times since 2014. The Prime Minister’s last visit to Sri Lanka took place in June 2019, to express solidarity after the Easter Sunday attacks.

Earlier, Prime Minister Modi visited Sri Lanka in March 2015, which was the first bilateral visit of a Prime Minister of India since 1987. PM Modi joined as the chief guest of the first International Wesak Day organized by Sri Lanka in May 2017.
