Fastag is required during the journey on the highway in India. This news is necessary for those who travel on the highway. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has introduced a new rule for Fastag, which has come into force from 17 February 2025.
New rules have been issued for Fastag, if your fastag is blacklisted or does not have enough balance, then your payment on the toll plaza will be rejected. You may also have to pay the fine. We will give information about this new rule in detail in this article.
Know the new rules of Fastag
70 minutes time will be given when blacklisted
- If your fastag is blacklisted, you will get 70 minutes to fix it.
- If you are not able to fix it within this period, then your payment on the toll will be rejected and you may have to pay a fine.
Balance validation made mandatory
Fastag should have sufficient balance at least 1 hour before reaching the toll plaza. If the balance is reduced, the payment will be rejected.
What is fastag being blacklisted
- There can be many reasons for Fastag being blacklist, such as:
- Fastag absence in balance
- Incomplete
- Fastag expires
- Inaccurate information in vehicle registration number
How much will be paid for payment reject
If your fastag payment is rejected, then you have to pay a fine of double toll fees. For example, if the toll fee is Rs 100, you will have to pay an additional fine of Rs 100.
What is system error code 176
If it remains in blacklisted or passive position even after 1 hour of scanning Fastag, the system error code 176 will appear and the payment will be canceled.

To know the status of your fastag, you have to go to the NHAI website and enter the registration number of your vehicle. From there you can easily find out whether your fastag is blacklisted or not.
Measures to protect Fastag from being blacklisted
Check and recharge the balance
Make sure you always have enough balance in your fastag. Check the balance before going to the toll plaza and recharge it when low.
Keep KYC update
If KYC of Fastag is not updated, then update it immediately. For this, contact your bank or fastag issuing institute.
Keep vehicle registration information correct
Ensure that the vehicle registration number on your fastag is correct. If there is a mistake, get it fixed.
Check fastag expiry
If your fastag has expired, apply for the new Fastag.
