Catholic nuns working as doctors in government hospitals in India are rare. However, senior physician Jean is an exception. She joined the government service in the hill district Idukki two years ago and is currently working as a medical officer at the Family Health Center in Maryur. For the first time in India, a Catholic nun has been made a medical officer.
Maryur is a remote village where many tribal communities live. Dr. Rose, a member of ‘Sisters of the Destitute’, is also known as Rosamma Thomas. He completed his postgraduate studies from St. John’s Medical College, Bangalore from MBBS and Anesthesia.
Left appointment in government hospital
After passing the Kerala PSC exam for medical service, he received his first government appointment at Kattappana Taluk Hospital in 2023. He later demanded transfer to Maryur Family Health Center.
Posting sought in Maryur to serve tribals
Dr. Jean Rose said about his decision to return to MBBS and PG and during my service in the National Health Mission, I worked in Maryur. She wanted to serve the tribals, so asked for deployment there again.
What did Jean say on achievement everyday
According to the ‘Kerala Conference of Major Suprears’ (KCMS) and ‘Kerala Catholic Bishops Council’ (KCBC) Jagrata Commission initiative ‘Voice of Nans’, Dr. Rose is the first to serve as a medical officer in the government hospital. He said that as a part of the community working for the destitute people, I like to serve the poor and the underprivileged.
Who are the genes daily
After completing his schooling in Chestutothodu near Pala in Kottayam district, he actively participated in charitable services. Dr. Rose is the daughter of Pala’s Mukelel Thomas and Rosamma, who has now settled in Princess, Idukki.
