This film has been made under the banner of an Indian non-profit NGO Salaam Balak Trust and non-profit production company Shine Global. Salaam Balak Trust was started by the family of famous director Mira Nair. This NGO supports the children living and working on the streets of Delhi-NCR. In October 2024, producer Guneet Monga was associated with this film as an executive producer. After this, actress Mindy Kelling joined this film in November 2024 and Priyanka Chopra Jonas in January 2025.

The world premiere of the film ‘Anuja’ took place on 8 June 2024 at the 24th Deadcentre Film Festival. The film won the Best Live Action Short award at the HollyShorts Film Festival in August 2024. In October 2024, it won the Audience Award for Short Film at the Montclair Film Festival. It also won the Grand Prize at the New York Shorts International Film Festival in October 2024. Its distribution rights were acquired by Netflix in January 2025.
