Gaza
The ceasefire on the long-running conflict in the Gaza Strip came into effect on Sunday, bringing some relief to the situation there. A ceasefire and hostage release agreement came into force after 15 days of violent clashes. During this, Israel appreciated the excellent role of India and expressed gratitude for the support. Israeli Ambassador Reuven Azar thanked for the support received from New Delhi. In a statement issued by the Israeli Embassy, Azar said, “I want to thank the Indian government and the Indian people for supporting our right to self-defense. We are extremely impressed by the support from Indians.” India had always appealed for restraint and ceasefire during this conflict. India’s stance in stopping the conflict and establishing peace in Gaza is being appreciated internationally.
Release of three Israeli women
With the ceasefire, Hamas released three Israeli hostage women. These women include Romy Gonen (24), Emily Damari (28) and Doron Steinbrecher (31). After their release, these women were taken to Israel with the help of the Red Cross, where a huge crowd welcomed them. Gonen was abducted from the Nova music festival, while the other two women were abducted from Kibbutz Kfar Aza. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed the release, saying, “The whole country embraces you.”
Celebration in Gaza, release of prisoners
After the implementation of the ceasefire, an atmosphere of celebration was seen in Gaza. A large number of Palestinians started returning to their homes. 90 Palestinian prisoners were also released on Sunday. The Israeli army has claimed to have recovered the body of Oron Shaul, a soldier killed in the 2014 Israel-Hamas war, during a special operation in Gaza.
Situation still sensitive
According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, however, the situation is still sensitive and 26 people have so far died in Israeli firing. People have been warned to be cautious when returning to the buffer zone and to stay away from Israeli forces.
