Mumbai
As the new year approaches, many changes are being prepared in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Recently, it has been announced to convene a Special General Meeting (SGM) in Mumbai on January 12. The main agenda of this meeting is the election for the post of Secretary and Treasurer. In place of Jai Shah, Devjit Saikia will be given the charge of Secretary, who will remain on this post till September 2025. Whereas Treasurer Arun Dhumal has completed his two terms, due to which he will have to step down from this post.
Questions may be raised on the performance of coach Gautam Gambhir
According to a report by Telegraph India, the performance of Gautam Gambhir and his coaching team is likely to be discussed in this meeting. Although this is not the primary issue, but considering the recent performance, there is growing dissatisfaction among some members of the board regarding Gambhir’s coaching. The 1-3 defeat against Australia in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) has put Team India in deep trouble.
ICC Champions Trophy last chance for Gambhir?
The biggest crisis for Gautam Gambhir is that the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025 can prove to be a turning point in his tenure. If India does not even reach the semi-finals in this tournament, then big questions are sure to be raised on their coaching.
Poor form and injury to key players have also been the major reasons behind Team India’s recent failures. The performance of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma has been below expectations, while Jasprit Bumrah’s injury has weakened the bowling attack.
Gautam Gambhir’s coaching tenure
Gautam Gambhir took over as coach in September 2024, when Team India was at its peak after winning the T20 World Cup. At that time India was in a strong position in Test and ODI also. Gambhir started his coaching tenure by defeating Bangladesh 2-0 in the Test. But after this the team’s performance continued to decline.
Team India had to face defeat at the hands of Sri Lanka in the ODI series. Then India lost 0-3 in the home Test series against New Zealand, which happened for the first time in the history of Indian cricket. After this, India also had to face defeat against Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.
