The Central Government today launched the ‘One Nation, One Subscription’ initiative from January 1, 2025.

New Delhi
The government launched the One Nation One Subscription-ONOS scheme from today. The objective of the scheme is to provide students with uninterrupted access to extensive digital knowledge resources including papers, journals and educational materials under a single subscription platform. With this scheme, there will be no need to take subscription at different places and knowledge will be accessible to everyone.

18 million students from government-aided higher education institutions including universities and IITs will have access to research papers published in top journals across the world as part of this initiative. Principal Scientific Advisor Professor Ajay Kumar Sood said that the scheme will be implemented in three phases.

In Phase-One, we integrated all the research institutes, universities and colleges of the Central and State Governments. After experiencing it, we will see how to integrate our private universities and colleges in Phase-Two and Phase-Three when any of your citizens of the country, if they want to access the knowledge, can do so. That will be phase-three. So for the first three years we have done phase-one, then phase-two and then phase-three.

The Union Cabinet had approved the One Nation, One Subscription scheme on November 25 last year. During the Cabinet decision, Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnav had explained about the scheme in detail. He said that under the ONOS scheme, a budget of Rs 6,000 crore has been allocated for a period of three years. It will also provide central assistance of Rs 150 crore annually to beneficiary authors for publication in selected elite open access journals.
The Union Cabinet has approved the One Nation One Subscription Scheme in line with this vision on 25 November 2024. The initiative aims to break barriers to knowledge by providing access to international scholarly journals and articles to all students, teachers, researchers and scientists in government higher education institutions (HEIs) and central government R&D centers in the country. It aims to ensure that India’s academic and research community is equipped with the best global resources, foster innovation and enhance the quality of research across diverse disciplines.

One Nation One Subscription scheme is the cornerstone of India’s ambition to become a self-reliant and developed nation by the year 2047. This initiative is a key component of the Developing India@2047 vision. This roadmap envisions India’s emergence as a leading global power driven by cutting-edge research, technological advancement and self-reliant progress. Through such initiatives, India is preparing to build on its rich heritage of knowledge, allowing it to stand at the forefront of global innovation and discovery.

Access to a good general is so limited, hence the Prime Minister has put it in a new form that why don’t all the universities pool their resources and make them common. By sharing, buy and subscribe all the world famous general editions and after that they become available in all our educational institutions across the country. It’s a very interesting thought and this is late to the six thousand crore, program for one nation, one subscription.
