China will build the world’s largest hydropower dam in Tibet, increasing tension between India and Bangladesh

Beijing
The Chinese government has announced that it is going to build a superpowerful dam on Tibet’s longest river, Yarlung Tsangpo. This dam will generate 3 times more electricity than the Three Georges Dam of China which affects the speed of the earth. China’s government news agency Xinhua has given this information on Wednesday. Chinese media says that this is going to be a huge engineering challenge for Beijing. The Chinese government is going to spend 137 billion dollars to build this dam. Experts say that this Chinese dam will leave any single infrastructure project running on earth far behind. What China calls Yarlung Tsangpo River is called Brahmaputra River in India. Many experts say that China can use this giant dam as a weapon to cause floods in the north-eastern states of India at any time.

The approximately 2900 km long Brahmaputra river passes through the Tibetan plateau before coming to India. This river forms the deepest trench on earth in Tibet. Tibetan Buddhist monks consider it very sacred. China is going to build this dam in its area of heavy rainfall near the border with India. China estimates that this dam will provide 300 billion kilowatt hours of electricity every year. At present, China Three Georges, which is called the world’s largest dam in terms of electricity generation, produces 88.2 billion kilowatt hours of electricity every year. The Three Georges Dam, located in China’s Hubei province, is built on the Yangtze River.

China’s dam is affecting the speed of the earth

The Three Georges Dam holds 40 billion cubic meters of water and it is also affecting the speed of rotation of the earth. Because of this, the Earth’s rotation speed is increasing by 0.06 microseconds every day. Scientists around the world are very worried about this. This dam was first proposed to be built by China’s first President Sun Yat Sen in the year 1919. He had said that while this will reduce floods, it will also become a symbol of China’s strength in front of the world. China is now going to build a new giant dam on the Brahmaputra river in Tibet. China intends to build four to six 30 km long tunnels to complete this very complex engineering project.

China will have to build this tunnel inside the Namcha Barwa mountain so that half of the water of the mighty Brahmaputra river can be diverted. Not only this, there is a great risk of earthquake at the place where this dam is to be built. When this Chinese dam is completed, it will easily provide electricity to 30 crore people every year. China claims that environmental standards will be taken full care of while building this dam.

Both India and Bangladesh are in danger from China’s dam

China has not told when the work on building this dam will start in Tibet and exactly where it will be built. This announcement by China can pose a big threat to India. This is not only for security but also for environment and livelihood. Crores of people in India and Bangladesh live on the waters of Brahmaputra river. In Bangladesh it is called Surma River. If China stops water, then there may be drought in both these countries and if China suddenly releases water, then there may be flood.
