Telecom and pay-TV service revenues in India are projected to grow from $44.9 billion in 2024 to $50.7 billion in 2029, driven by the mobile data and fixed broadband segments. This information was given in a report.
According to Global Data’s ‘India Telecom Operators Country Intelligence Report’, mobile voice service revenues will decline during the forecast period due to a sustained decline in mobile voice service ARPU, as users increasingly shift to OTT communication platforms.
Shrikant Vaidya, telecom analyst at Global Data, said, “4G is the leading mobile technology in terms of subscriber base in India, accounting for 68.9 percent of total mobile subscriptions registered in 2024.
However, this share is expected to decline to 32.1 percent in 2029, mainly due to the migration of customers to high-speed 5G services.”
Mobile data service revenues, on the other hand, will continue to grow at a CAGR of 5.5 percent over the forecast period, driven by continued growth in smartphone adoption, growth in mobile internet subscriptions and rising consumption of mobile data services.
On the other hand, according to Vaidya, 5D services will account for 15 percent of total mobile subscriptions in 2024, increasing to 61.8 percent in 2029, linked to the ongoing 5G network expansion by mobile operators. For example, Airtel’s 5G network plans to reach 140,000 villages by September 2024.
The report notes that fixed broadband service revenues are expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.2 percent over the period 2024-29, which is in line with the continued growth in fixed broadband subscriptions, especially on FTTH/B access lines.
“Growing demand and increasing availability of higher speed fiber broadband connectivity on the back of government efforts to expand fiber network infrastructure across the country will drive the adoption of fiber broadband service over the forecast period,” Vaidya said.
For example, the third phase of BharatNet, costing Rs 650 billion ($7.8 billion), aimed at improving fiber broadband connectivity in rural areas across the country, is expected to be launched in the near future.
