Kyiv
Russia launched a massive missile and drone attack targeting Ukrainian energy plants over Christmas. A thermal power plant was damaged in the attack and people had to take shelter in metro stations on Christmas morning. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said more than 70 missiles, including ballistic ones, and 100 drones were used in the attack.
Putin deliberately chose Christmas
He said Putin deliberately chose Christmas for the attack. What could be more inhuman than this? They are trying to bring a blackout to Ukraine. Russia continues to use winter as a weapon. There has been no comment from Russia on the attacks. Ukraine managed to shoot down 50 missiles and a large number of drones.
The Ukrainian president, posting on X (formerly Twitter), accused Russia of deliberately choosing this day. He wrote, “Every major attack by Russia takes time to prepare. This is never a snap decision. It is a deliberate selection of goals and timing. Putin chose to attack on Christmas Day. What could be more inhuman than this?” Zelensky further said that more than 70 missiles, including ballistic missiles, and more than 100 drones were used in this attack. Their main goal was to destroy Ukraine’s energy system.
Attack on Kherson and Kharkiv, dozens injured
The governor of Kherson confirmed that one person was killed and three others were injured in the attack. Energy infrastructure in the Dnipropetrovsk region was also targeted amid the cold. Governor Sergiy Lysak advised residents to remain vigilant. The northeastern city of Kharkiv was also not left untouched by this attack. Mayor Igor Terekhov described it as a “massive missile attack”. The regional governor recorded seven attacks and said at least three people were injured.
Continued attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure
Russia has repeatedly targeted Ukraine’s energy infrastructure in the war that began in February 2022. Even in November, Russia attacked with about 200 missiles and drones, due to which there was power cut in the entire country. Zelensky also accused Russia of using cluster bombs. He called it a “disgusting advance.”
Demand for international support
Ukraine has urged its allies to provide advanced air defense systems. Recently America has given permission to Ukraine to use long-range missiles, regarding which Russia has given a strong warning.
growing challenge amid war
Ukraine is facing a tough winter amid cold and constant attacks. At the same time, Russia claims that it has captured more than 190 Ukrainian settlements this year. Both countries have suffered huge losses in this war. This attack on Christmas Day has made it clear that the end of the conflict is still far away.
