Washington
Even before assuming the presidency for the second time, Donald Trump’s controversial statements have created a stir across the world. America’s newly elected President Donald Trump, in his recent statement, has expressed his desire to buy Greenland, take back control of the Panama Canal and, in a joking manner, include Canada in America. These statements of his have not only increased global tension but have also confused world leaders whether Trump is serious in his statements or this is his strategy to gain headlines.
Trump’s statements on Greenland and Panama Canal
Trump recently told a conservative conference that the US was being charged an “unfair fee” for using the Panama Canal. They threatened that if this “looting” did not stop, they would demand the return of the Panama Canal to US control. However, he did not explain how to achieve this. Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino responded strongly to Trump’s statement, saying, “The Panama Canal and its surrounding area are part of our country and will remain so.” Apart from this, Trump has also said something on Greenland which may increase tension. Trump once again expressed his desire to buy the area, calling it “vital to American national security.” Greenland’s Prime Minister Moote Egede reacted strongly, saying, “Greenland is not for sale and never will be.”
National Security and Trade Strategy
Experts believe that Trump’s comments reflect his “America First” approach, in which he wants to adopt an aggressive approach in foreign policy regarding American trade and national security interests. Citing China’s growing influence over the Panama Canal, Trump said it is in the US interest to ensure the canal’s neutrality. China is the second largest user of this canal. This is why China has made large economic investments in Panama in recent years. With regard to Greenland, the US operates the Pitufik Space Base there. Greenland is rich in natural resources, particularly rare minerals and oil, and is located in a strategic location for trade in the Arctic Circle.
Political reaction and upcoming challenges
Denmark has expressed a willingness to work with the Trump administration and has announced a large increase in its defense budget for Greenland. Trump’s social media posts have also fueled controversies. He shared a photo on “Truth Social” that shows the American flag waving in the middle of the Panama Canal. His son Eric Trump posted a photo on Twitter, showing Greenland, the Panama Canal and Canada added to an online shopping cart.
What is the Greenland and Panama Canal?

Natural Resources: Large reserves of rare minerals, oil and gas are found here.
Military Importance: America’s Pitufik Space Base (Thule Air Base) is located in Greenland, which is important for military and space activities.

Panama Canal- The Panama Canal is an artificial waterway, which connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans through the country of Panama located in Central America.
History: This canal was built by the US in 1914 and remained under US control until 1999. It was handed over to Panama under the 1977 agreement.

It is a major center of global trade. Ships do not need to travel around South America, saving time and fuel.
China’s influence: China has made major investments in Panama in recent years, making the canal a point of geopolitical controversy.
Current status: The canal is operated and owned by Panama, and is a main pillar of the country’s economy.
Both Greenland and the Panama Canal are extremely important for natural resources, geopolitical status, and global trade. This is the reason why the issues of their control continue to become a topic of discussion in international politics. This aggressive attitude of Trump may be part of his strategy. During the first term, he had gained popularity among his supporters with similar statements and actions. Now it remains to be seen whether his statements turn into reality after assuming office on January 20 or remain limited to election strategy only.
