The Para Athletics World Championships 2025 will be held from 26 September to 5 October 2025 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, which will also host the World Para Athletics Grand Prix for the first time next March. Next year’s Para Athletics World Championships will be held in New Delhi, with India hosting the event for the first time, the World Para Athletics (WPA) announced on Thursday (December 19).
The competition will be held at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium
The Para Athletics World Championships, the world’s biggest single Para sports competition, will be held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium from 26 September to 5 October 2025. New Delhi 2025 will be the 12th edition of the championship and the fourth time it will be hosted in Asia after Doha 2015, Dubai 2019 and Kobe 2024.
Additionally, the WPA announced that New Delhi will also host the World Para Athletics Grand Prix for the first time next year. The event, to be held at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium from March 11 to 13, will give fans an early opportunity to experience the thrill of Para Athletics ahead of the World Championships.
The 2025 Para Athletics World Championships will be the biggest international competition ever to be held in India.
Paul Fitzgerald, Head of World Para Athletics, said in a World Para Athletics press release, “We are delighted to announce that the first major championships of the new Paralympic cycle towards Los Angeles 2028 will be held in New Delhi. The 2025 Para Athletics World Championships will be the biggest international Para sports competition ever to be held in India, aiming to grow our sport, our fan base and impact society’s perception of persons with disabilities in the world’s most populous country. Will present a big opportunity.”
India is the best example of development of para athletics
He said, “India is the best example of the growth of para athletics in the last decade. From winning two silver medals at the Doha 2015 World Championships to securing 17 medals, including six gold, at this year’s World Championships in Kobe, the progress is clear. This success reflects the work of the National Paralympic Committee of India and the investment being made in sports, especially Para athletics, in the country. We’ve looked at what impact major events can have and what legacy they can leave to make Para sports more visible and accessible to all. “We believe it can happen in New Delhi, and we look forward to welcoming the world’s best athletes to India next year.”
Organizing Paralympics is important in India’s journey to become a global sports superpower.
The National Paralympic Committee of India (NPC India) said in a statement, “NPC India is privileged to host the Para Athletics World Championships for the first time in India. This historic event marks an important milestone in India’s journey to becoming a global sporting superpower and strengthens our bid to host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games. This prestigious championship will not only elevate India’s position on the global sporting map but will also play an important role in accelerating the Paralympic movement within the country. “With a population of over 60 million persons with disabilities, this event is an important step in promoting inclusivity, empowering athletes and expanding opportunities for athletes with disabilities.”
Sports event is proof of India’s development
The statement said, “We are excited to welcome athletes, coaches and officials from across the world to showcase India’s unparalleled progress in the field of Para sports. “The event will be a testament to India’s growth, in line with the vision of a “New India” emphasized by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.”
The last edition of the World Championships, held in Kobe, Japan in May, featured over 1,000 athletes from over a hundred countries. China topped the medal tally with 87 medals, including 33 gold, while India finished in the top six for the first time.
