US President-elect Donald Trump wants to change the 150-year-old law of birthright citizenship as soon as he assumes power. He will reach the White House on January 20 and as soon as he arrives, there are preparations to abolish this law. He says that this law is wrong and it is increasing America’s problems. Due to this, children of people who entered America illegally are also getting the opportunity to become citizens and they are taking advantage of the resources here. According to American civil law, if people living in any country go there and a child is born there, then that child becomes entitled to American citizenship.
Donald Trump and his advisors have objection to this. In an interview, Donald Trump said, ‘We are going to change this law. We will have to go among the people, but the laws will change. An advisor to Donald Trump said that not every country has this kind of law. This is the case only in America and people are taking advantage of it by using it unnecessarily. Therefore we will have to make changes in the system itself. The right to citizenship by birth was enacted under the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution.
This law says, ‘All people born in the United States are entitled to citizenship. He also comes under the judicial system here. Even if one is born in any state of America. Critics of this law, including Trump, say that it has increased birth tourism in America. Eric Ruark, director of the Research for Numbers Institute, says that it happens on a large scale that pregnant women come to America and give birth here. People do this so that their child gets American citizenship. Now such a law will have to be made that if someone comes to America and gives birth to a child, he will not get citizenship just by doing so.
Donald Trump said that we do not want to break up families. Therefore, the only way is for the entire family to stay together and leave America. This means that people who have got American citizenship on the basis of birth will also be excluded. If such a law comes then it will have a big impact on Indians also. According to the report of Pew Research, 48 lakh people of Indian origin have settled in America. Of these, 16 lakh have got citizenship on the basis of birth only. If this law is repealed, then birth certificates will not be used as proof of citizenship.
