Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has warned Syria’s new government that Israel will take strong action if Iran is allowed to regain a foothold in Syria or if Iranian weapons are delivered to Hezbollah. He said that Israel’s aim is not to interfere in Syria’s internal affairs, but necessary steps will be taken for the country’s security.
“If the new Syrian government allows Iran to reestablish itself or allows Iranian weapons to reach Hezbollah, we will take strong action and the consequences will be severe,” Netanyahu said. Whatever happened with the previous government, the same can happen with this new government also.” Netanyahu reported that he had given permission for the Israeli Air Force to attack military capabilities left by Syria’s old government. Its objective was to ensure that these weapons did not fall into the hands of Jihadis.
He compared this action to that of the British Air Force, which attacked the ships of the Vichy regime of France during the Second World War, so that they could not fall into the hands of the Nazis. Netanyahu also said Israel was willing to build ties with Syria’s new government, but only if Syria refrained from supporting Iran and Hezbollah. He said, *”If the new Syrian government takes steps against our security, we will give a strong response.”
