The possibility of merging DA with basic salary is being considered, 53% DA will be merged with basic salary.

New Delhi
Before Diwali, the Central Government increased the Dearness Allowance (DA) of central employees by 3%, due to which DA has now increased from 50% to 53%. Along with this, Dearness Relief (DR) for pensioners has also been increased by 3%. After this decision, there are now questions whether this increased DA will be merged into the basic salary of the employees before the next revision in January 2025. If this happens, we may see permanent changes in the salaries of government employees.

Possibility of merging DA with basic salary
This is not the first time that the possibility of merging DA with basic salary is being considered. Earlier also during the 5th and 6th Pay Commission, when dearness allowance had crossed 50%, it was recommended to merge it with Basic. According to Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav, discussions are going on at present, but no final decision has been taken yet.

Possible impact on salary
If DA is merged with basic salary, it will see permanent changes in the salary structure. This change will not only increase the basic salary but will also impact allowances and other benefits. Central employees will also get the benefit of this decision in their pension and other financial benefits.

Probable date of next DA hike
Usually the government announces amendments to DA and DR in March and September-October, which become effective from January and July respectively. The next DA hike may be announced in March 2025, before Holi. This will be a big relief for central employees and pensioners at the beginning of the next financial year.
